Shared Spaces

Shared Spaces initiative encourages everyone to:

  • Promote the use of non-specialised accessible facilities in our centres where able too.
  • Avoid blocking ramps, lifts, or pathways.
  • Be patient as some people need more time.
  • Respect equipment and fittings.
  • Respect other people who may use the space before or after them.

Shared spaces only work when we all do our part. By being mindful, respectful and inclusive, we can make GEL a place where everyone feels welcome, supported, and where everybody belongs.

What are 'Shared Spaces'?

Shared spaces are facilities designed to be inclusive and accessible for everyone; especially those with disabilities, hidden conditions/disability, or support requirements. These include accessible toilets, change rooms, and specialised change facilities like Changing Places.

These spaces are essential, not optional, for many in our community. They provide dignity, safety, and independence.

How to Leave the Space Respectfully?

Help us keep these spaces welcoming and functional:

  • Lower the shower head to its lowest setting after use, this is so it can be accessible for an independent wheelchair user.
  • Take all belongings with you after you change as others may need the space urgently.
  • Dispose of rubbish properly, including sanitary products in the provided bins.
  • Wipe down the change table after use, including the remote.
  • Leave the change table at its lowest height.
  • Return the remote to its hook.

Tips On How to Speak Up Respectfully

Sometimes, you may need to have a conversation about the use of our accessible spaces or ask someone to vacate a space.

Here's a respectful way to do it:

  • “Hi, I’m a wheelchair user and I require the use of the hoist in this facility. I know there are other bathrooms/accessible bathrooms available—would you consider using one of those instead?”
  • “Hi, I rely on the use of the equipment in this room to be able use the bathroom safely. If you don’t require this equipment, would you mind using another facility?”

Please remember: Not all disabilities are visible (see Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative information below). If the person declines, respect their response and seek staff support if needed. Remember the above are just suggestions, if you do not feel

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative

At Glen Eira Leisure, we proudly support the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative.

The Sunflower is a simple tool for people to voluntarily indicate that they have a disability or condition that may not be immediately visible. By wearing a sunflower lanyard, badge, or wristband, individuals discreetly signal that they may need a helping hand, a little more time, or additional support.

If you see someone wearing the sunflower symbol, please respond with patience, kindness, and respect.

Interested in wearing the sunflower?
Speak to our staff about how to access a sunflower badge, lanyard, or bracelet.

Let’s continue building a community that’s inclusive, understanding, and supportive of everybody.

Scope Communication Access

All staff at GEL are trained and can communicate successfully with people with communication difficulties using the Scope Communication Access Accreditation. There are Scope Communication Access cards throughout the centre which staff use to help communicate with members and guests. You will see Scope’s nationally recognised Communication Access Accreditation Symbol displayed throughout the Glen Eira Leisure centres.

Please bring your own communication board or use one of our centre designed communication boards at all our facilities.
