World Drowning Prevention Day

In April 2021, the United Nations declared 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day, recognising drowning as a serious but preventable public health issue.

Every year, over 300,000 people worldwide lose their lives to drowning, including hundreds of families across Australia. Most drowning deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, but no community is immune. Children and young people are most at risk.

Join us in recognising World Drowning Prevention Day. A global initiative focused on saving lives through awareness and action.
This event brings our community together to learn simple, effective ways to stay safe around water. Through activities, information, and shared stories, we’ll highlight how prevention starts with all of us.

Here’s how you can take action!

  • Enrol in swimming lessons
  • Supervise children at all times around water
  • Check your pool fence and gate
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
  • Wear a lifejacket when on the water
  • Know the conditions
  • Learn CPR
  • Train to become a swim teacher or pool lifeguard

Every action matters. Together, we can unite to turn the tide on drowning.

Pool Games Descriptions

Lifejacket Game (50m Pool)

Children will practise putting on a lifejacket and experience how it helps keep them safe in the water. While floating together in a circle, instructors will create waves and splashes to simulate challenging conditions. This activity teaches children to stay calm, work as a team, and understand the importance of wearing a properly fitted lifejacket.

Reach Rescue Practice & Float Device Relay Races (LTS)

Children will learn safe rescue techniques, including how to help someone from the poolside using reach rescues and floating aids. They will then take part in fun relay races using floatation devices, reinforcing how everyday floating objects can assist in an emergency.

Toy Scramble (Pirates Cove, Leisure Pool)

Children will collect scattered toys and return them to a designated bucket. During the activity, instructors will discuss water safety awareness, encouraging children to identify hazards and understand the importance of staying alert in and around the water.
